2004 News

The Thistle Fleet #2 2004 Fall Awards party (for photos and more click here) was on Nov 13th at Crescent.  There was well over 30 people there on a clear, cool, November evening.  The fire was warm, the food was fantastic, and the company...well what can be said but the people make the party.  Below are photos just before the awards and at the bottom of the page is the list of trophy winners and the meeting agenda.  After the meeting we shared stories of George Devlin who past away recently.  To see a Tribute Page for George click here.

Here is a link to 2004 Season the results page click here, and for the Overall click here.

The Crescent Regatta was August 28th.  This is an invitational for any who would like to attend.  There are usually 3 races.

1/8/03  The Thistle Class lost a very dear friend in Dave Valla.  Our sympathies to his family.  Read this note from Champ:

Dave Valla, one of the greatest assets to the Thistle Class.

We went to the viewing on Sunday in Naperville (Chicago area). Eric Pomber went with us. Tom Hubbel was there and filled us in that it was an uncommon virus that attacks the heart and is fatal in about 3 days. If you do survive and get to a hospital, you will need a transplant. He died in his hotel room (in Idaho)on Wed morning and was found later when he did not show up for work. We saw Janet and the kids, Finefrocks were staying with her for several days (she does not want to be alone). They had been married now little over 5 years, what a shock. Jack Finefrock is giving the eulogy for the funeral today, Monday.

Saw lot of thistlers, Finefrock's (Kyle too), Makielksi's, Lavender's, Dan Reasoner, Blair and Bryce Dryden, Hubbel's, and even Sandy Rapp. There were ton's of family and friends there also.

She asked for donations to the Thistle class in Dave's name and Ken and I decided for the Fleet to donate ($50). Suzy and I sent flowers. If any one wants to donate, send donations to the class in Dave's name. Maybe we ought to come up with a unique card at the Feb 7 party (maybe with a picture of the fleet members and all sign). Thinking of you type of thing, this is when Janet will really be feeling alone. Any other ideas welcome, maybe a time to get together any other collection for donating to the Thistle Class in Dave's name.

It is times like these that we realize what a family the Thistle Class is and how unique the class is. Dave gave back so much to the class he will be sorely missed.

11/16  Fall Awards Party at George Devlins!  What a great place for a Thistle Party!  After all...George is the one who started Fleet #2.  Soon after arriving you just had to go and look at #108 in the garage to marvel at all of the original wood.  Then George took us to what he calls the 'heart and sole of this place' ... his workshop.  A lathe, combination horizontal/vertical mill, industrial table saw, band saw, jointer...it was guy heaven!  George cooked two big pots of great chili...a ton of great food was brought.  Everyone took turns viewing the lighthouse too.  All in all a great wrap up to another great season.  Thanks again George!

10/5-6  Icebreaker Regatta was another big success.    Results/Story  Photos  Notice of Regatta

8/28  The last Wednesday Night race!  It is always a Dark and Stormy night!  After racing the  elixer of Gosslings Rum and Ginger Beer was flowing.  Pretty tasty stuff.

8/24  Crescent Regatta - The Thistle fleet was the largest class under 21 feet!

8/9 - 11  O'day Single Handed Championships -Results: after Friday, after Saturday, Sunday/Final. Pictures

7/28 Crescent Day.  Our fleet sponsored a great day full of events for kids of all ages.  It all started with the famous Watermelon Race! As soon as I get some stories I will post them...

7/20-21  Lake St Clair One Design Invitational Regatta at Crescent. Notice of Race / Registration Form

7/10  The Margarita Party was a fun time as everyone was able to talk about the carnage on the race course (NNE wind at 20-25 kts!)  A couple boats got very clean inside and out!  Thanks to Molly and Suzy for manning, oops, personing the blenders.

6/5/02  We are all saddened by the death of Debbie Goodwin(Sherry).  Although that was not the main reason we did not sail this Wednesday evening (20 kt NE wind and rain) it did give many in our fleet a chance to reminisce and share each others sorrow.  Click here for a picture of Debbie and Ron sailing in the '99 Michiana Districts.

7/4  We sailed, we kayaked, we swam, we barbequed, we shrimp boiled, we soccered...we had fun!

6/29 - 30  Michiana Districts Michigan City Yacht Club in Indiana did a great job considering the conditions and we got 4 races complete.  Blair Dryden won the event.  Results.

6/8/02  The Island Party was a great success!  Thanks to Paul, Bob and Champ for manning the barbeque and to everyone who brought food! Also a big thanks to John Garr, Jon Waymann, and Ross Kogel for putting this event on.

6/7/02  Greg Fisher Clinic was cancelled and will be rescheduled.

5/29/02  Kick-Off Keg Party - there were more beverages and snacks than people!

5/27/02  Larry Klein Memorial Race - Thistles take 1, 2, 3.  This was the 8th Annual for all boats with a Portsmouth rating and is usually won by Tornados and sometimes Snipes.  The light air was to the Thistles favor with Thor/Molly Krembel and Mike Loosvelt holding on for the win.

5/19/02 Three Thistles turned up for some close racing in light shifty North winds under sunny skies.

5/5/02  Spring Shakedown
Well...a couple boats were ready to go.  We thought it would be more fun to divide up and take Lasers out instead.  We followed it up with our first picnic of the year under a beautiful sunny sky...HELLO SUMMERTIME!

4/19/02  Spring Meeting
Wow...just mention a Thistle get together and it fills the club!  We ate, we socialized, and oh yeh...we had a short meeting...
