George Devlin Remembrance Page

This page will be a tribute to George Devlin.  The first is the story that was written for CSYC's monthly newsletter, The Breeze .  As stories and pictures come in they will be posted here.

George Devlin sails to a better place...

George Devlin has passed.  George was in his own home, in his own bed, facing the Light House as he sailed on to a better place.  We all have our own special remembrances of George.  Whether it was from being taught Thistling by the master or having your Thistle held together with "Devlin Dust" we all have been touched in one way or another by him.

George, we wish you fair winds on your journey...

George Devlin
June 23, 1913 to October 19, 2004
CSYC Member from 1957
Thistle #108 "Skirl"

At George's request there was no funeral.  The family will be planning a celebration of George's life sometime next summer when we could all tell stories about how George was a part of our lives.  George's daughter, Sara, passes along thanks from the immediate family to all the members of Crecscent as extended members of George's family and for making George such an important part of the CSYC family over the many years of his membership.

Thistle Fleet #2 will be having a "Remembrance Hour" during the evening of Nov 13th, 2004 at our Fall Awards / Oyster Roast held outdoors at Crescent.  George founded our fleet at Grosse Ile Yacht Club and move it to Crescent some time around when his membership started in 1957.  We owe him many thanks for that.

My own fond memory - by Ken Swetka
In 2002 we held the Fall Awards party for Thistle Fleet #2 at George's house.  I will never forget George giving us a tour of his favorite parts of his house.  They were his garage where he was working on his Thistle #108 and his workshop.  You could tell there was no where George would rather be than making something in that workshop.  George called it "the heart and sole of this place".  He showed us his power tools and gave the story of where each came from and its capabilities and shortcomings.  Just for that party he had made extended legs for a coffee table to bring it up to dining height and modified the legs of a low couch to make it more comfortable.  He also made 2 large pots of chili for us to enjoy.  He was 89 at the time.  Our awards that year were brass plaques with a Thistle outline and the sail number was #108.  We gave one to George which said, "1st Hospitality, 1st Dedication to Thistling, Thank You Very Much".  I made that award and was very proud to have handed it to him that evening.  Thanks again George...

Also, Thanks to Loren Hoffman for bringing George to the club in recent years and for visiting him often.  You could tell from Loren's stories of their visits the relationship was something special.
